Disaster Kit Information

General Disaster Planning information is available at ready.gov.

Emergency Kit information is available at redcross.org.

Emergency supply kits should include:

  • Three-day supply of nonperishable food and bottled water
  • Can opener
  • Battery-powered weather radio
  • Flashlight with extra batteries
  • First aid kit
  • Prescription medications and glasses
  • formula and diapers
  • Pet food and extra water for your pet
  • Copies of important documents, including driver’s license, Social Security card, proof of residence, insurance policies, wills, deeds, birth and marriage certificates, tax records, etc. You can use the Emergency Financial First Aid Kit (EFFAK) – PDF, 277Kb) developed by Operation Hope, FEMA and Citizen Corps to help you organize your information.
  • Wrench or pliers to turn off utilities

Additional items to consider adding:

  • Cash or traveler’s checks and change
  • Emergency reference material such as a first aid book
  • Sleeping bags or warm blankets
  • Complete change of clothing including a long sleeved shirt, long pants and sturdy shoes
  • Household chlorine bleach and medicine dropper – When diluted nine parts water to one part bleach, bleach can be used as a disinfectant. Do not use scented, color safe or bleaches with added cleaners
  • Fire Extinguisher
  • Matches in a waterproof container
  • Feminine supplies and personal hygiene items
  • Paper cups, plates, towels and plastic utensils
  • Paper and pencil
  • Books, games, puzzles or other activities for children

You should keep a smaller version of your emergency supply kit in your vehicle, in case you are traveling when an emergency happens.
